GRAIN STORAGE – INSECT MANAGEMENT
 
With grain now well and truly in storage, now is a timely reminder to check your stored grain for insects. 
A monthly check should be made on all on-farm grain storages.  The check involves monitoring the following critical parameters;

a)  Quality:  Check overall quality of the grain.  Look for obvious issues such as condensation in the tops of silos and moulds that can indicate issues with aeration, venting or grain moisture.

b)  Temperature:  Temperature plays a significant part in the activity of insects.  For example, if the grain temperature is warm, then pests breed rapidly.  If grain temperature is kept in the  18 – 23⁰C range in summer and 10 - 15⁰C range in winter with  aeration, live insect numbers are likely to be low. 

c)  Insects:  Stored grain should be inspected at least once per month for the presence of insects.
