Protein measurement on-farm - "I can afford it"

Grain growers are increasingly turning their attention to the benefits of operating an on-farm grain protein analyser to maximise their profit.

Major grain handlers for a long time have operated near-infrared (NIR) grain analysers which rapidly determine protein, moisture and oil percentage of a grain sample.  Recently, there has been a surge in the purchase of on-farm portable grain anaylsers.

Generally speaking, an average grower can view the purchase cost of a protein meter at $5 per tonne for one harvest season.

Grain Storage:  Pressure the key to aeration drying

As part of a GRDC-funded project within the Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity, a team of scientists and extension staff are working to create a method for farmers and advisers to measure the working airflow of fans installed in their storages.

Philip Burrill and Andrew Ridley from the Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), along with Chris Saunders from the University of South Australia, are endeavouring to remove some of the guesswork from grain aeration.
